Rebuilding lives with Headway: Graham’s journey of recovery
In December 2023, Graham Cartwright’s life changed. While at work, he suffered two brain bleeds and a fall that left him with a fractured skull.

Feeling lost, Graham was introduced to Headway Black Country through a recommendation from his social worker. Initially hesitant, he met with Dave, a staff member who reassured him about the support Headway could provide. Encouraged by their conversation, Graham decided to give it a try.
From his first visit to the Headway Centre in Dudley, Graham’s life began to improve. He joined music sessions in the mornings and IT classes in the afternoons, rediscovering his passions and regaining lost skills.
“Music was always a big part of my life,” Graham shared. “The sessions run by Emma, a support worker, and Dave, who is a guitarist, helped me reconnect with that joy.”
The IT classes were equally transformative, allowing Graham to rebuild his confidence in using technology. “I’d used computers in my job before my injury, so getting back to that gave me a sense of normalcy,” he said. The staff, including Dee, the learning coordinator, and Sue, a support worker, provided guidance and encouragement every step of the way. “They’re always there to help with anything you need,” Graham added.
Although Graham continues to face challenges with his mobility, the support from Headway has given him the tools to navigate life with greater independence. He’s also found a sense of friendship among other clients. “Talking with people who truly understand what you’re going through is invaluable,” he said.
In 2024, Graham and his partner encountered another hurdle when she was diagnosed with cancer. As his carer, her diagnosis was particularly difficult for both of them. Yet, the Headway team’s support provided Graham with a sense of stability during this tough time. “Headway has helped us stay positive and find light in dark moments,” he reflected.
Graham’s gratitude for Headway Black Country is boundless. “The staff genuinely care,” he said. “From the big things, like helping with recovery, to small acts of kindness, like Nick always asking how I’m doing, they’ve made a world of difference.”
Graham’s story highlights the incredible impact of Headway Black Country’s work. It’s a place where individuals find not just recovery, but also a community that empowers them to thrive.
“I would recommend Headway to anyone facing the challenges of a brain injury,” Graham said. “It’s truly been a lifeline for me.”
